Bounce versus Breakout

I get questions from time to time on the differences between a Bounce and a Breakout. If you would like me to post an informational blurb on Bounces versus Breakouts, leave me a comment response to the affirmative. If I get a lot of responses, I will go ahead and create the post.

One thing about posting comments. I purposely allowed even anonymous responses so it would be easy for any viewer to respond. This is a free, open web page, so anyone can view it. You don't have to "sign up" to comment, and you don't have to give your name.

I have gotten enough responses that I will go ahead and post some information about a Bounce versus a Breakout. I'll work on it throughout the week.

  1. To be honest with you, anything you can write that i can refer to is very helpfull. So if you would write up something on breakout versus bounce, go for it.

    Thank you in advance,

  6. Absolutely,

What times do teach virtual coaching? I've only attended one of your classes, and have read your blog faithfully ever since, but I can't narrow down what time that was. Or if anyone else can chime in here and let me in the loop, I would be most greatful.

    Thanks a lot

  7. In answer to Ken: go ahead and ask questions here, I will answer them as I can. A lot of the posts I do between phone calls at work, so I'm not in an ideal format yet, but we shall see.....
In answer to Scott: when you are on the Investools Website you will see a "Search" box in the upper right corner. Type in virtual coaching and the first link in the pop-up box is the virtual coaching schedule. You will see me there on Wednesday morning, and Thursday and Friday evening.

  8. Dwight:
I would most definitely like your insights on a bounce vs a breakout. If you could address a few questions in this area I'd sure a appreciate it.
    1) Breakouts-
    a) What volume level (increase) do you require to consider it a legit breakout? ie: 25% above the 20 day avg.
b: What time of the day would you take the trade? ie: Wait until near the close of the breakout day? or based on market conditions take it interday?
    2) Bounces-
    a) Do you have volume requirements ?
    b) Do you "target shoot" these much or wait for such things as once it's so high above support or below resistance to enter the trade or like a process of breaking the high of the low day, etc.?
    3) Do you tend to only take these trades if they are following the general market-or will you consider some of them separate-like the commodity plays this paste week?
Just workin' to establish a process that's, as you would consider, repeatable and highly probable.

I agree with Steve, anything your write (and have written) has been very helpful.

  9. Hi Dwight,
I have my "Dwight" notebook and pen ready to go. Always eager to soak in what you have to share.

Another question I have is at what point in a bottom or reversal of trend do you feel confortable getting into trade. For example, on a downward trend, do you get in at the first higher low or wait for confirmation a second higher low?
